You should have also mentioned the fact that MS-DOS(FAT) has a limit of only 4gb transfer. For greater files, change it to ExFAT, it is also compatible with both Mac and pc.

Not useful for me. Mine is already formatted Mac OS Extended and I still get this error.

yeah no help My drive was formatted as ExFat when I ran into this issue. But its unformattable on MacOS, Windows, and Linux. Read-only on all OS and unable to format. Think my drive is corrupted somehow.

Thank you.. apple screws me over everytime. Also found this internet: MS-DOS (FAT): Choose this format if the size of the disk is 32 GB or less. ExFAT: Choose this format if the size of the disk is over 32 GB.

Best Solution I found: Search for Paragon Driver and install it in your mac Your Mac will be able to read and write on the external hard drive :)
